From the preaching of John the Baptist

Taken from chapter 3 of the Gospel of Saint Luke

In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar,
Pontius Pilate being governor of Judea,
Herod tetrarch of Galilee,
Annas and Caiaphas being high priests,
the word of the Lord came to John in the wilderness,
son of Zechariah.

He went through the whole region of Jordan
preaching repentance
as it is written in the book of Isaiah.
And the people cried out, “What shall we do now?”
John replied:
“He who has two tunics
give one to the one who doesn't have it;
and let him who has food to eat do the same;
and let there be no violence among you.”
Deep in their hearts,
everyone asked if John was not the Christ.
But he took the floor and said:
“I indeed baptize you with water,
but he who is mightier than I comes,
and I am not worthy to untie his sandal straps;
he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.
His spade he has in his hand,
to clear your threshing floor and gather the wheat into your barn.”
Thus, and with many other exhortations,
John announced the good news to the people,
as it is written in the book of Isaiah:
“Voice of one crying in the desert,
prepare the way of the Lord,
make your paths straight.
The crooked paths will become straight,
and the rough, flat.
Every man will see the salvation of God!”
