Why are birthdays celebrated?

– Mom, why do you celebrate birthdays?

by Ruth Salles

The mother replied:

– Each year we live is the period in which, together with the earth, we make a long circuit around the sun. At the same time, with each passing day, the earth makes a small turn around its axis. Along with it, we revolve around the daily tasks, and it is in these tasks that our personality acts. But, in the long journey around the central sun, it is our soul that acts in the great evolutionary work. At the end of this year-long tour, we need the hug and human warmth of friends, who give us the strength and courage to go on another tour. This celebration is the impetus for us to spin once more.

– Mom, what about the candles on the cake?
– They represent all the years already lived and fulfilled. The flame that rises brings to the divinity all the effort and all the ardor we put into our efforts, and the friends, with their love for us, sing in praise of the work of another year. At this point, we blow out the candles, as if to say, “This has already been accomplished. Now, I'm ready for more.”
