Legend of Nature – author unknown
In the beginning of the world – they say – everything was just sea and land. On one side, Água Grande, the immense, wild, foaming sea. On the other, the Black Land, huge, empty of trees and animals.
Between the two, one day, war broke out. A terrible fight began. Black, immense, hard, the Earth marched against the Big Water. The Water, enveloping itself in a shield of foam, roared tremendously and sank its teeth into the Earth's flank.
But, in the end, he won the Earth. And, victorious, pushing back the soft wall of the Big Water, she snatched from it as spoils of battle, some of her daughters, the lagoons, who were prisoners between the arms of the Earth and never managed to free themselves.
This is why, even today, beating its back, the ocean roars with rage, as if wanting to enter the Earth. It is the longing Água Grande, in a maternal fury, who wants to look for her dear daughters, the lakes, so close, prisoners of the Earth.
