Talking about the flora of Brazil

Do Mulungu ao Manacá is a book by Ruth Salles about the tropical flora of Brazil, made for children between 8 and 80 years old. It is a very different and special book, because in addition to the botanical aspects, there are poems, legends, songs, tongue twisters, worm talk, fern scolding, letter to embaúba, plantinhês study, and children will also learn history and many cultural curiosities that contextualize the plants and their qualities. With this, the study of tropical plants can be done in a much more playful and profound way. It addresses 160 plants that are part of our daily lives, providing us with food, medicine, shade, purifying the air we breathe, serving as a habitat for thousands of nature beings, and beautifying our world with their flowers.

the illustrations

This book has another very special feature. It was all illustrated by students at Waldorf School Rudolf Steiner, from 1st grade children to high school students. All classes participated, and from each class some drawings were selected to illustrate the book, which was an arduous task, as there were many beautiful drawings. You will see how the content of the text enriched children's imagination and can strengthen their affective bond with nature, and how artistic ability evolves throughout the school journey.

This edition was a partnership between Instituto Artesocial and Escola Waldorf Rudolf Steiner, and is commemorating the 60th anniversary of the foundation of this school, the precursor of Waldorf Pedagogy in Brazil. It was printed on 150 gr coated paper, 19 x 25 format, with 208 pages. In addition to the school's support, a crowdfunding project was carried out for its printing, which was supported by 383 people, who purchased the book in advance. See here the relationship of supporters.

In the video below you know a little about the process of illustration of the book by the students.
