The oak and the grass

Aesop's fable

A tall and superb oak grew beside a stream, and so proud was he of its height and leafy branches, that he despised the humble grass that lived at its feet.

One day the grass asked him why he was so proud.

– “Of all the trees that grow in these surroundings, I am the most beautiful”, he replied; I reach the clouds and my branches are vigorous while you, unhappy, drag yourself along the ground, exposing yourself to being trampled by animals.”

– “You are right”, replied the grass, “but when the woodcutter marks you to be cut and you feel the edge of the ax wound your trunk, perhaps you will envy my humility.”
