Piece of a tale by the Brothers Grimm

by Ruth Salles

Dramatization of the tale by the Brothers Grimm, better known among us by the second title, from the version by French writer Charles Perrault. The first and last musical themes are in the pentatonic scale; the second is a popular tune.

CHARACTERS: Chorus of Court People, King, Queen, Frog, Servant, 12 Good Fairies, 1 Evil Fairy, Rosie, Old Woman, Thorn Hedge, Young King, Grandfather.

KING (walking with the queen):
- What a pity we don't have a son, Queen...

QUEEN:
"And I wanted a little child so badly!"

QUEEN AND CHORUS (sing):
“Happy is the dove with her pigeons,
and the mother ducks with her ducklings.
Why doesn't a little angel come to me?
I dream of him an endless dream.”

QUEEN:
– On the bank of the river I see a frog!

FROG:
– Oh, Queen, your wish will be fulfilled.
Patience little sister but you'll see
what a beautiful little daughter you will be born with.

QUEEN AND CHORUS (sing):
“Of an angel she speaks, who comes to me,
that I'm going to pack in my arms like this, (bis)
with great affection and very softly.”

CHORUS (after a moment):
– What a great surprise! who didn't see that
look!
The princess was born! Welcome she be!
It's a little girl! Who hasn't seen it, see it!
Beautiful little princess… Welcome to her!

QUEEN (to the king):
- Our little daughter, O King my lord,
It's so pink, it looks like a flower.

KING:
– Rosinha de Thorns your name will be.
And there will be a great feast here!

QUEEN:
– The fairies will come, they will be invited,
and our Rosinha will be blessed.
(sings, rocking Rosinha, or just chants “um, hum…”, without singing) :
“Oh, sleep, Rosinha, the sun has already set.
It is there sleeping, and night has come.”
(King and Queen beside the crib. The servant with the dishes. The fairies enter, one at a time.)

KING (to the 1st fairy):
– Oh, welcome! Come in, fairy, I beg you!
(to the servant):
'Put her a plate of gold!'

1st FAIRY (next to the crib):
– Bless this little girl.
This little princess will be virtuous!

2nd FAIRY (at a gesture from the king):
– Bless this little girl.
Will be brave, this little princess!

FROM THE 3rd TO THE 11th FAIRY:
– A good heart, O my princess!
– A clear mind, O my princess!
– You will not tell a lie, O my princess!
- Have patience, O my princess!
“You will always be happy, O my princess!
– I give you modesty, O my princess!
– I give you beauty, O my princess!
- You will have a lot of sense, O my princess!
– It will be delicate, O my princess!
(Before the 12th fairy enters the 13th. The servant had already set twelve golden plates on the table.)

CREATED:
– Oh, sir, there are no more dishes.
More than twelve, in gold we have none.

KING (to servant):
– Put one of the others in its place.
(to the 13th fairy):
– Sit down, good fairy. Come celebrate!

13th FAIRY (next to the crib):
— This affront, O king, I will avenge.
For this princess, there is no hope.
At fifteen years old
in the spindle of the rock and will die! (walks out, furious)

12th FAIRY (next to the crib):
- Only sleeping will she stay.
Your sleep, a hundred years will last.

KING:
– This is a law!
Burn all the spindles in the kingdom!
So says the king!

QUEEN (sings with the choir):
“Happy Rose of Thorns will grow,
just as the moon grows in the sky to shine.”
(Pause for time to pass. The King, the Queen and Rosinha.)

KING:
– You grew up, little princess.
It's fifteen years old, little girl.

QUEEN:
- Your gift will arrive.
Let's go out and look.
(Leave).

PINK:
- Fifteen years! The world is beautiful!
I will visit the entire castle!
…….
How narrow is this ladder!
How small is this door.

ROSE (old lady):
- Good morning, my grandmother,
Ma'am, what are you doing?

OLD:
- I'm spinning, little girl,
as you are seeing.

PINK:
– That wheel turning, turning, graceful…
I'll get the fuse! I'm so excited!
(Sticks in the spindle)
My eyes are closing…
What sleep is coming...

(Falls down on a bed and sleeps. The choir speaks, while the boys
that represent the hedge of thorns surround Rosinha.)

CHOIR:
- Oh, Rosie, so dear,
our Sleeping Beauty.
The whole house also sleeps.
The long wait began.
Like the lyrics of the song,
from the very old song...
Time ran by,
the weeds grew around,
and one day came a young king
full of love…

YOUNG KING:
– What is hiding, grandpa,
behind that thorn hedge?

GRANDMOTHER:
- Said my parents' grandfather,
that there is a castle behind,
where a princess sleeps.
this sleeping beauty
wait for a prince to arrive
that you can wake up.
Who ever tried to go there alone
got caught in the thorns. (He leaves.)

YOUNG KING:
- Well, I want to venture
and wake up the little princess.
(He throws himself at the hedge with the sword. The hedge is
move away for him to pass.)

HEDGE AND CHORUS:
“The hundred years have passed.
And he passes without any damage.
(The young king walks along and sees the king, queen and servant sleeping,
the old woman and finally the little princess.)

YOUNG KING:
- The princess will wake up
with the kiss I'll give...
(Bends down and kisses her.)

ROSE (opening her eyes):
– Where is everyone?
I fell into such a deep sleep...
King, did you come to wake me up?
It's you I'm going to marry.

YOUNG KING:
– Together, from the tower we will descend,
and your parents so let's look.
And I will ask for your hand,
and we'll get married soon, then.
(Everyone wakes up little by little and starts talking.)

CHORUS AND ALL OF THE COURT:
– Good morning, sun, good morning, sky,
good morning, leg, good morning, hand,
good morning, earth, good morning, friends,
good morning, fly, good morning, dog.
We salute you, fair world,
after such a deep sleep.
What a joy! there smiling,
Rosinha with Thorns is coming.
Finally got here
with the young king who awakened her.

CHORUS AND FINAL DANCE:
''Let's dance, everyone singing!
Sleeping Beauty has woken up and is getting married! (Bis)!
